Nagalapuram
30.12.2009
Dear Indiensgruppen
My loving thothirams to you.
Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our News letter brings our warm wishes and greetings for a happy Christmas and a blessed New Year 2010 with 2009 years news.
This year we had the 1st year memorial service of Sr Gladys Ponnayya on 15th May 2009. During day time we were 150 persons including staff and old students took part in it. The same night we had a prayer meeting at the Centre with Church people. We miss her so much and it is very difficult with out her.
The Tuition Centres in Fishermen and Palmyra climbers’ area are going on well. Some of the tuition centres children’s education is automatically affected because of their parent’s migration to other areas for Palmyra climbing. Palmyra climbers moved to their labour place in February 2009 and returned to their own villages in August 2009. This issue is going on every year. Few parents left their children at their relative houses. Few children have to walk from their tent (where their parents stay and sleep) to the school. These children do not get food at the right time and it affects children’s health. Hence the tuition centres have important role in children’s lives.
The widows self employment programme is going on well. This year 14 special women ( widows ) received financial help to improve their trade and to start income generating programme like fish and dry fish selling, pigs and chicken rearing and selling snacks at the seashore. These special women meet twice in a month and they have improved a lot in their life.
The Women Workers’ Training Centre has organized an eye camp in Nagalpuram on 11.07.09 with people’s active participation through Self Help Groups and Village Development Committees. First of all it is very helpful to give good health care to the people who are in an interior remote area. Nagalapuram is a big village and has so many villages around Nagalapuram with poor road and transport facilities. There were 267 people from 29 villages attended the camp and 127 people were selected for an eye cataract operations. The people from 0 - 35 km radius attended the camp. People received nutritious food (rice, dhals and potatoes and beans as side dishes) for lunch on that day. Most of the people had medical check up first time for their eyes. Usually people think that when some one is getting old, it is not important for them to go for an eye check up. So elderly people are getting neglected and given no importance. Hence people found it very useful to have this eye camp and are like an important event in their life.
We conduct this camp once a year and people eagerly wait for this eye camp. All people who went for this camp are doing well and they are happy that they are able to see and manage their daily activities by themselves.
We have opened a new Day Care Centre (Kinder garden School) for the children who are 2 ½ to 5 years old. Children are happy to come and enjoy their time here. There are 29 children in the Day Care centre. We had to open this Day Care Centre because children who are below 5 years old are roaming in streets while their parents are in their labour work. It is not safe for the children to play on the streets and it is high risk. During rainy seasons there will be stagnant water here and there and children like to play in water and it is not safety for children. There is one Government Day Care centre in the village which functions from morning 11 ‘o’ clock till 12 .30 pm. One day Sr Chellkani akka and I went to the farm, on the way we saw three children returned with their empty plates ( a plate to eat lunch ). We asked them why you coming back and they told us that there is no teacher at the Day Care Centre. Children returned to their homes but their parents were not at home and they are in the labour work. We have seen this scene few times. Hence we started this Day Care for the benefit of small children and they are with us till evening 4 ‘o’ clock. The parents will come and take the children to their homes around 4 ‘o’ clock. Hence poor parents are able to send their children to this Day Care Centre and they can do their labour work with free mind.
This year we have introduced a new variety of hybrid back yard poultry (Chicken). The name of the chicken is Giriraja. It yields more eggs and the meat is tasty. We would like to increase the quality of our country chicken. This year we have distributed 1000 chicken to 500 families.
Another interesting thing is 62 families came forward to construct toilets at their homes. Usually people use nature as their toilets. It was very difficult to make them understand about the importance of toilets and we are proud that this year have come forward. One of the reasons for not having toilets all these years, they have water scarcity very often for drinking and some of the months it would be difficult to take bath.
We have admitted 25 new children in our Boarding Home for Children At Risk. Really some of the children had been in vulnerable situations and we are happy that they got the opportunity to come to our Boarding Home. I would like to introduce one of the children.
Her name is Dayaneshi. Her mother died when she was a child. She has a younger sister. Her father remarried again for three times. She was sexually abused by her father and so she was admitted into the Dohnavur fellowship. another Boarding Home. 145 km away from Nagalapuram. But because of her naughty behaviour, they were not able to keep her at their Boarding Home. She is a mischievous girl. She used to beat others and also she always wants to irritate others by her actions. She expresses her love and also her naughtiness to the children she likes. Now she is happy and her attitude and her behavior have changed.
Nagalapuram means Cobra Village. I have heard that in the early life of our Centre Sr Gladys Ponnayya , the founder of the Centre used to see many snakes every day and people helped her to kill the same. Every year we used to kill many snakes and many we have seen sometimes they escape.
One month ago that means in the middle of September we cleaned the farm to have this hybrid chicken. Then our farm staff found one poisonous snake Russel Vaiper at our farm. Then the snake catcher caught the snake and he has had kept it at his studio in a cage. After one month it gave birth to 21 snakes’ kids. Thank God otherwise there will be 21 new families in our farm. Now the snake catcher left the snake and its children in a mountain!!!!. He is one of the men who care for nature and its living beings. Are you afraid of snake?
This year especially we give awareness to our villagers about their rights and the available resources in Government for their total development. We have trained them to assess their needs and to discuss the same. Now villagers are coming forward to discuss their village needs and try to do the same. We have organized Self Help Groups for women and men in villages and this year we have focused specially on formation of Village Development Committee which includes all members of Self Help Groups. This year we had lots of inputs on Child Rights and Ecological Child Rights. We are conducting training programmes on Child Rights. We had a big Ecological Child Rights Convention in Chennai on 31st October 2009 and children from 5 states participated at the Convention. The memorandum came out of this Convention was brought to Delhi and for the big meeting was held on climate change in Copenhagen Denmark, on 14th December 2009. In this case only rich people have to look after their life style of living and to be changed. Poor people easily will be adjusted for the natural living without vehicle, fridge, air-condition etc. Now using polythene is prohibited in some places. We are discussing this issue and also this ecological child rights and climate change in our project work in all levels of groups. This year we had distributed nearly 1500 trees to plant in our villages. Every day in the news paper we can read this topic about climate change.
We celebrated women’s day on 15th of August on the day of our Country’s Independence Day. All our Village development Committee jointly selected their federation leader Mrs Shenbegalakshmi of Lakshmipuram. Women had awareness on Fire safety, the preventive method, Women and Law. 450 Women and Children took part in the programme. The whole function was led by the Village Development Committee Leader.
We had children day function on 1st of February 2009 at Nagalapuram nearly 460 children and young girls attended the function and there were various children and young girls programme. There were village folk dance using small kerchiefs, karagattam (keeping a small pot on their head) to dance, kummi (a kind folk dance clapping hands) another kind of folk dance using sticks, thappatta ( musical instruments )
We have introduced a new organic manure ( Panchakaviya ) which is made up of five ingredients from cow - cow dung, milk, curd, ghee, urine of cow, Indian sugar Jaggery and riped bananas. This is very good manure for plants to use it before flowering and after flowering. This organic manure is a good nutrient and gives good yield. We have trained all our staff Tuition teachers, Facilitators and Day Care Centre teachers to prepare this Organic manure. Hence we provided the opportunity to prepare this Organic Manure in each village and people can get the organic manure from their village itself. We have prepared this demonstration as a model farm. We have also introduced Vermicompost Earth worm cultivation and demonstrated the same to our villagers.
Your contributions are helped to do many activities in Nagalapuram and around Nagalapuram.
We are grateful and thankful to you for your love, support and prayers,
Yours sincerely

Statusrapport 2009
